Beneath the Surface

What first appears as a simple fracture in winter ice slowly transforms into something deeper — a river system, tree roots, veins, or lightning suspended beneath a frozen surface. Captured at Bear Island in Great Falls National Park, this monochrome abstract invites the viewer to pause and discover the quiet patterns nature conceals in plain sight. Through delicate contrast and organic form, Beneath the Surface explores the tension between stillness and movement, fragility and strength. The image reflects the unseen structures that connect the natural world — and perhaps ourselves — beneath the surface of what we initially perceive. Photo © copyright by Sheri Haupt.
